What is Cardiovascular Disease?

Heart and blood vessel disease, which is also called heart disease, includes a number of issues, many of which are linked to the process called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis denotes a condition which develops when substance which is called plaque builds up in the lining of arteries. This builds up usually narrows the arteries, which makes it more difficult for blood to travel throughout our body. If blood clot forms, that may stop the blood flow, which eventually causes the heart attack or stroke.

A heart attack will occur when the blood flow to certain part of the heart is blocked by a blood clot. If this clot blocks of the blood flow entirely, the part of the heart muscle which is supplied by the affected artery starts to die. Most individuals survive their heart attack and then return to their health and normal lives to enjoy several decades of productive life. However, having a stroke or heart attack means you have to make several changes in your lifestyle. Your doctor will advocate you of several medications as well as lifestyle changes, which will depend much on how serious the heart attack has affected your body and what degree of heart disease caused your heart attack.

An ischemic stroke, which is the most common type, occurs when a blood vessel which feeds the brain is blocked, typically from a blood clot. When the blood supply to certain part of the brain is blocked off, the brain cells will die out. The outcome will be the inability to function some of the previous functions, such as talking or walking. Another stroke, called hemorrhagic, occurs when blood vessel in the brain bursts. The most probably cause is uncontrolled hypertension.

Some impacts of the stroke are ever-lasting, if too many cells in the brain die after stroke because of the lack of blood as well as oxygen to the very area. These cells can never be replaced. The good news is some brain cells do not diet as they are only temporarily affected. Injured cells can cure themselves. Over a certain period of time, just as the repair takes place, some functions of our body will improve. In addition, other brain cells may take charge of these areas which were injured. That way, speech may be better, strength may get better, and memory will improve. This process of recovery is what is available in rehabilitation.

Some Other Types of Cardiovascular Disease

First, there is heart failure, which does not mean that the heart stops to beat. It sometimes is known as congestive heart failure, meaning that heart is not pumping blood as well as it usually should. The heart still keeps working, yet the body’s need for oxygen and blood is not being met. Heart failure can even be worse, when left untreated. If your loved one has heart failure, it is so important to follow our GP’s order.

Second, there is Arrhythmia. This denotes abnormal rhythm of the heart. There are a number of types of arrhythmias. The heart can beat too fast, too slow, or in a regular way. Bradycardia occurs when the heart rate falls below 60 beats per minute. There is also the so called Tachycardia, occurring when the heart is more than one hundred beats each minute. Arrhythmia can impact how well our heart works. The heart may stop pumping enough blood to suffice body’s needs.

Heart disease may also occur in the form of Heart valve issues. When heart valves do not open sufficiently to allow sufficient blood flow through, it is called the stenosis. When the heart valves do not close properly and enable blood to leak, it is called regurgitation. As the valve leaflets bulge or prolapse back into the chamber at the upper part of the heart, it is a condition known as mitral valve prolapse. When this occurs, they will not close properly. That will allow blood to flow backward through them.

To evaluate the heart disease, your doctor will carry out some diagnostic tests to find out how serious the disease is and which area of the heart is affected. Without a doubt, that will determine the whole pathway of your forthcoming treatment and medication options.
